«THE BIRTH OF A MAN»
Спектакль по рассказам Максима Горького и произведениям Эдварда Грига
The works by and about Maxim Gorky often mention music, from Russian folk songs to world classics. One of Gorky’s favorite composers was Edvard Grieg, whose works are the basis for this concert performance. Gorky’s stories Hodgepodge and The Birth of a Man are recited by the famous actors Evgeny Mironov and Alexandra Ursulyak accompanied by the ensemble “Komon” and the chamber ensemble “Moscow Soloists” under the baton of Yuri Bashmet.
«Gorky’s stories dwell on specific situations and specific people, small and very unhappy. It is a cosmic view of people who live and suffer on earth. On the other hand, the play is filled with the immenseness of the natural element contained in Grieg’s music. Hence the dissonance,» says Evgeny Mironov.
The performance based on classical literature, folk songs, and symphonic music poses the question of a painful mismatch between the human life and the beauty and majesty of nature. Yuri Bashmet argues that: Gorky and Grieg have much in common; they both explore the human heart, which makes their works fit well together.
«We have not changed the musical interpretation. We have used our repertoire works: two very rarely performed songs by Grieg, which he himself arranged for the orchestra. Many years ago, I brought these songs’ scores from abroad, as they were not available in the Soviet Union,» said the Moscow Soloists conductor, People’s Artist of the USSR Yuri Bashmet.
