On February 25, the world premiere of the opera buffa “The Village Philosopher” performed by the Italian collective La Magnifica Comunità conducted by Enrico Casazza, a leading conductor and musician in the field of baroque and classical music performed on historical instruments, took place on the stage of the Winter Theater.
The buffa opera The Village Philosopher, created by Baldassare Galuppi in 1754, is based on a libretto by Carlo Goldoni. The premiere took place in Venice on October 26 of the same year. The work immediately gained popularity and was staged in many European countries.
The opera tells the story of the village philosopher Trithemio, who wants to marry his daughter Eugenia to the philosopher Nardo. However, Eugenia is already in love with the nobleman Rinaldo. The maid Lesbina, trying to prevent Nardo from meeting with Eugenia, impersonates her. Nardo, who did not know Evgenia personally, falls in love with Lesbina. After a series of misunderstandings, the truth is revealed, but Nardo retains feelings for Lesbina. As a result, two weddings are arranged: Nardo marries Lesbina, and Rinaldo marries Eugenia.
The festival is supported by the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, and the Sochi City Administration.
