«SHAKESPEARE. SHOSTAKOVICH. HAMLET.»
A theatrical concert
The famous Shakespearean play gets a new resonance in the theatrical concert Shakespeare. Shostakovich. Hamlet performed by Evgeny Mironov and the Symphony Orchestra Novaya Rossiya under the baton of Yuri Bashmet.
The author of the production idea was Evgeny Mironov, who plays the role of Hamlet for the third time in his acting career. He has previously worked with the world’s leading directors Peter Stein and Robert Lepage; in the latter case, he performed all the roles in the play. In Marina Brusnikina’s new production, Mironov acts as an elocutionist to the music of Dmitry Shostakovich. In his music, Shostakovich repeatedly turned to Shakespeare’s works, including Hamlet; in this theatrical concert, the orchestra performs his soundtrack to Grigory Kozintsev’s 1964 eponymous film and his music for Nikolai Akimov’s play staged at the Vakhtangov Theatre in 1932. The five-act tragedy rapidly gains momentum through the synthesis with the music, revealing the magnitude of Hamlet’s tragedy through new means of dramaturgy.
