“Since your wonderful creative forum was born, not so many years have passed. However, despite its youth, it became significant and remarkable event in cultural life of Sochi and whole Russia”.

V.V. Putin

Sochi… A well-known southern resort of Russia became famous after first Winter Olympic Games of our country. But here is ten years that this city could be named winter cultural capital of Russia as well. Here in 2008 for the first time Winter International Arts Festival under the leadership of Yuri Bashmet has been held. And today, only after 10 years, Festival in Sochi became the biggest art winter holiday on the scale of the whole Eurasia, without yielding the most prestige global festivals.

Since 2011 Sochi festival has become European Festivals Association member. Since 2017 the festival has become Silk Road International League of Theaters member and the first Russian festival included to this international organization.

We successfully implement a long-term development concept of Sochi Festival.

It would be hard to name all the participants of Sochi forum who have performed on the Winter Theatre stage and Organ Hall of Sochi Philharmonic during ten years. Leading representatives of classical, jazz, variety and ethnic music; stars of world ballet, musical, operetta; famous dance, drama and experimental theatrical companies – since the first year of its existence Winter International Arts Festival in Sochi was positioned by maestro Yuri Bashmet as a place outside the borders, where representatives of different types, genres and directions could perform.

Valery Gergiev and “Swingle singers”, Denis Matsuev and Diana Arbenina, Nikolay Lugansky and “Terem-quartet”, Vadim Repin and Emir Kusturica, Maxim Vengerov and Jean-Luc Ponty, Hibla Gerzmava and Pelageya, Barbara Frittoli and Nino Katamadze… Famous maîtres, gifted representatives of new generation, very young beginners artists and musicians – every one of them make a contribution in a high artistic bar of Sochi festival. Ballet nights with soloists of Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres, London Covent Garden and Paris Grand Opera alternate with performances of ethnic musicians and dancers from China, Argentine, Palestine and South Korea; productions of Milano puppet theatre “Piccola Scala” alternate with Tchekhov Moscow Art Theatre, Vahtangov theatre and St.-Petersburg MDT of Lev Dodin, performances of a legendary Alexandrov Ensemble alternate with Big Band of Yuri Butman… In parallel there was a comprehensive program included cinema retrospectives, workshops, photo and video art, sport and charitable events, poetic tournaments, conferences and more…

Special occasions of the festival during last 4 years have become musical productions which are created especially for the festival. It is in Sochi where productions of “Fantastic Carmen”, “Do not leave your planet”, “Fortunatissimo or hopelessly happy man” have been premiered. Now there are a number of productions that are preparing for being showed on the festivals in 2018 and 2019.

The most important point of Yuri Bashmet multilateral activity is his educational projects. Creative meetings and master classes, evenings in musical schools and colleges, concerts with young musicians – not a single festival goes without it. And here also Sochi became the biggest basis – within the frameworks of the festival Annual Youth Musical Academy, International competition of young composers are held, Youth Symphony Orchestra of Russia was established. On every Sochi festival there is a co-production with leading musical venues of Europe.
